Goodreads Synopsis
St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger...
Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.
My Review:
When I really got into reading, I never thought that I would like books about vampires. My sister knew this so she got me to read this book to see if I would like it. I was skeptical at first, but once I started reading it, I was hooked. The way the book comes together is just too good.
It starts with Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway and Vasilisa "Lissa" Dragomir on the run from gaurdians trying to take them back to St. Vladimir's, an academy for Moroi and Dhampirs. They've done well at running for two years, but unfortunatley their time on the run is up. Gaurdian Demitri Belivok and several others have caught up to them and are taking them back to the academy. On their way back, Demitri questions Rose on why she attacked when she was clearly outnumbered. She responds with a simple, "Because I'm her gaurdian."
Let's talk characters!
In my opinion, Mead depicted the personalities of the characters, flaws and all, perfectly.
Rosemarie Hathaway is a dhampir that takes her responsibilities very seriously. She is the best friend and future gaurdian of Vasilisa Dragomir. She is a very sarcastic and impulsive person, but knows when to be serious. During the course of the book, she starts to get a clearer outlook on how life can turn out. She cares for Lissa and would do anything to protect her, even if that means getting kicked out of school.
Vasilisa Dragomir a.k.a. Lissa is the last of the Dragomir family. Her parents and brother were killed in a car accident. She used to be a strong outspoken person, but started becoming fragile after everything that happened. She and Rose are best friends and stick together through everything. She is believed to have not specialized in a certain element like all other Moris do. Lissa is a naturally sweet, bubbly person, and wouldn't hurt a fly. The only thing is, Lissa is emotionally unstable and tends break down from time to time. Regardless, Rose is there to help her through everything.
Dimitri Belikov is a very famous Gaurdian. He already has six molnija marks, tattoos that indicate how many strigoi one has killed. Demitri is the one who brougth Rose and Lissa back to the academy. He is also Rose's mentor, since they are both destined to become Lissa's gaurdians. He is a very quiet person, and tends not to let people in. It is said that he is at times lonely. While traing her, he and Rose grow, closer over time, and he starts letting her in. Even though he lets her in, he is still very reserved.
Victor Dashkov is a Moroi Prince. He was supposed to become king after Tatiana Ivashkov, but contracted Sandovsky's Syndrome, a chronic disease that is slowly killing him. He is known to be Lissa's half-uncle since he was very close to her family. Throughout the book, Victor is shown to be very kind and intelligent. He is very concerned about how the Moroi are ruled, and wishes he could take his place as future king.
Natalie Dashkov is the only daughter of Victor Dashkov, and is a quiet person, so to speak. She tends to keep out of Moroi Royal life, despite being royal herself. She is a very talkative person, and very often rants on and on. Though she is quiet, she cares about those close to her, especially her father. She would do anything for him, as you will find out in this book.
Alberta Petrov is the Captain of the gaurds at St. Vladamir's. She is older than others that gaurd the school, but knows her responsibilties and what she must do. She is also known to be very skilled. Throughout the book and the series, she gives Rose advice that she believes will help her in life.
The Plot!
The plot was very well written. I don't think she could have done a better job writing this book. She makes the characters relatable and the settings realistic. She paints a very vivid picture, and you feel like you're right there alongside the characters. While reading this book, I felt like everything about it, vampres and all, was actually real. The way she lays out the story and the things happening is just amazing.
So with everything considered I am giving this book....
I hope you enjoyed or will enjoy this read! I know I did!! Let me know in the comments!!
